چکیده

Cross-modal priming of lexical decision is a well-established method for probing the activation of competing interpretations of lexically-ambiguous spoken sequences (Zwitserlood, 1989; Gow & Gordon, 1995; Tabossi, Burani & Scott, 1995; Gaskell & Marslen-Wilson, 1996). In constructing materials for use in priming tasks, a variety of different relations between prime and target have been utilised. Target words that are both semantically and associatively related to the prime are commonly used. For example, the pair cat and DOG not only have a similar meaning, but are also associatively related since a majority of participants in a free-association task produce the word DOG for the cue word cat (Moss & Older, 1996).

Vertical similarity in spoken word recognition: multiple lexical activation, individual differences, and the role of sentence context.

Four experiments investigated acoustic-phonetic similarity in the mapping process between the speech signal and lexical representations (vertical similarity). Auditory stimuli were used where ambiguous initial phonemes rendered a phoneme sequence lexically ambiguous (perceptual-lexical ambiguities). A cross-modal priming paradigm (Experiments 1, 2, and 3) showed facilitation for targets related...

Graded lexical activation by pseudowords in cross-modal semantic priming:Spreading of activation, backward priming, or repair?

Spoken word recognition models treat mismatching sensory information differently. Mismatching information deactivates lexical entries according to one type of models. In another type of models, lexical entries are activated reflecting their degree of match with the input. This issue is mainly investigated with cross-modal semantic priming and lexical decision. This paradigm has been suspected o...

Competition dynamics of second-language listening.

Spoken-word recognition in a nonnative language is particularly difficult where it depends on discrimination between confusable phonemes. Four experiments here examine whether this difficulty is in part due to phantom competition from "near-words" in speech. Dutch listeners confuse English /æ/ and /ε/, which could lead to the sequence daf being interpreted as deaf, or lemp being interpreted as ...

On measuring multiple lexical activation using the cross-modal semantic priming technique

Cross-modal semantic priming with partial auditory primes seems a good technique to assess spoken-word recognition, because it allows tracking the activation of multiple word candidates. However, previous research using this technique has found inconsistent results. First, a priming experiment is reported that addresses this technique’s validity. Results show that semantic priming is not observ...

Processing lexically embedded spoken words.

A large number of multisyllabic words contain syllables that are themselves words. Previous research using cross-modal priming and word-spotting tasks suggests that embedded words may be activated when the carrier word is heard. To determine the effects of an embedded word on processing of the larger word, processing times for matched pairs of bisyllabic words were examined to contrast the effe...
